If you have just been proposed to over this Christmas season, then firstly, congratulations on your engagement! You’ve got the ring on your finger and a date in mind, so now it’s the exciting time to shop for your wedding dress. We’ve been working with brides-to-be for over 25 years, and we’ve picked up quite a few tips and bits of advice along the way, to make sure you know what to expect from your first appointment.
- Finding your bridal boutique
The internet and bridal magazines are a great place to start, especially if you have a particular designer in mind. It’s also important to speak to your friends and see if they have any recommendations. Draw up a shortlist and make an appointment. Saturday’s are usually very busy, so it’s worth booking in advance. (Although there may seem to be some great bargains on the internet, our advice is to never buy a dress on-line as we have seen some shocking examples of dresses bought online).
- Your first appointment
Usually your initial appointment will last about an hour. Within that time you can expect to try on a variety of gowns. We also ask brides-to-be to keep an open mind when trying on different styles, you might be surprised about what suits you. Bridal consultants and stylists are extremely talented in finding the dress that will compliment your body shape, personality and, if required, wedding theme.
- Who should you bring?
It’s tempting to bring the entire bridal party with you to your first bridal appointment, however too many cooks really can spoil the broth. You’re about to make a very important decision, so we would recommend having two of your closest friends or relatives with you. Too many opinions can often be overwhelming, and really there is only one person to please, and that’s you!
- Let’s talk underwear!
Your first bridal appointment will involve a lot of changing in and out of dresses, so you’ll need supportive underwear that you feel comfortable in. We’d recommend flesh coloured, seamless underwear and a strapless or multiway bra. If needed we also have a good range of bridal basques available for you try on if needed. You want to feel confident and fabulous for your first consultation, but we’d recommend not wearing very heavy make-up, as the boutique samples could become marked.
- When should you start looking for your dress?
We like to see brides-to-be for their first consultation around 9 to 14 months before the wedding. Any sooner and you could spend up to 18 months questioning your original decision as more options become available when new seasons collections are released. From ordering your dress to final alterations, the entire process should take around 8 to 12 months, so aim to work to that time frame
- Only a few months to go and no dress? Buy a sample.
We always have designer sample dresses available for brides to buy when there isn’t enough time to order a dress in. They are often reduced so it is a fantastic chance to buy a beautiful designer dress at a fraction of the original cost straight off the rail so you know you will have it in time for your wedding. Most of our samples are in sizes 10/12/14, but we offer a full alteration service to make sure they fit you properly on your wedding day. There is always a selection of our sale samples shown on our website if you would like see what is available, although this is not the full range available.
We will re-open on Wednesday 2nd January. Have a look at our designers page here and you will find plenty of lovely dresses to tempt you. If you would like to book an appointment to come and try wedding dresses these are the numbers you need to book your first appointment:
