You’re Engaged | Find Your Dream Wedding Dress

Finding your dream wedding dress

Let us first say huge congratulations on your engagement! It is such a magical time of year to get engaged.  Perhaps one of the first things you will discuss and organise is a date for your wedding. Once you’ve got the date set, it is now time to start shopping for your wedding dress.

Having worked with brides-to-be for over 25 years, we’ve picked up a lot of helpful hints and tips to make the most of your shopping experience and first bridal appointment.

When should you start looking for your dream wedding dress?

We like to see brides-to-be around nine to twelve months before the wedding date. This makes sure you are happy with your chosen dress and you don’t spend 18 months questioning your choice or seeing newer collections at your chosen bridal boutique. From ordering your dress to final alterations, the whole process should take eight to twelve months.

Finding your bridal boutique

Your friends are a great place to start when you are looking for a bridal boutique. If they’ve had a positive experience and you like the collections that the shop carries, then make sure you pay them a visit. If a boutique doesn’t really have the right dresses or fit with your personal style, then the best place to start is by purchasing a couple of bridal magazines and taking to the internet. Create a shortlist of your favourite boutiques or designers and make plans to book an appointment. Just keep in mind that Saturdays are usually the busiest day of the week, so it is worth booking your appointment in advance.

Don’t get caught out by internet offers

This year we’ve seen more brides than ever get caught out by buying a designer dress online. When the package arrives, it either isn’t as expected, is damaged or isn’t a designer gown.

What to expect from your first bridal appointment

Your first appointment is likely to last about an hour. It’s always worthwhile visiting the boutiques website to identify some of the gowns you really like. Once you start your appointment, we would advise keeping an open mind on some of the styles and gowns. Bridal consultants and stylists are extremely experienced when it comes to finding the right dress for your figure and personality. They are also likely to suggest designs and silhouettes that you hadn’t even thought of.

Bringing guests to your appointment

This experience is all about you! And while there is a temptation to bring all your relatives and friends to your first appointment, this is likely to be overwhelming when it comes to you deciding on the dress. We recommend picking two people whose opinions you really value to be your guests at the first fitting.

Making the right underwear choice

We all know how exhausting shopping can be, so for your first appointment make sure you wear comfortable and supportive underwear. We have a range of bridal basques available for you to try, but wearing a multi-way or strapless bra is always helpful for your first bridal appointment. We all want to feel fabulous and confident, but we would advise that you avoid wearing any heavy face makeup as this could mark the samples.
